Maria Thomas and Harold Pinckney won first place in Business-to-Business Marketing competitions at the Delta Epsilon Chi state conference.

The Atlanta Technical College students were presented with an award, and will travel to Anaheim, CA to compete at the DEX International Conference in April.

When Thomas and Pinckney teamed up to compete at the state competitions during the DEX state conferences, they set out to win. What they had not planned on was being dubbed the “Diversity Team.” Maria Thomas is a nontraditional student at Atlanta Tech, returning to school after being out of the work force for 12 years. A 1974 GED recipient, returning to school to update her work skills, Maria joined DEX the post secondary division of DECA to expand on her professional skills in order to become more marketable.

Last year, entering her first competition ever, Thomas placed second in the Business Ethics event. Harold Pinckney on the other hand is a young, first time college attendee. Pinckney also placed second in his event at last year’s conference. Bringing old school and new school together paid off handsomely for the diversity team, the first place winners are headed to sunny California to the International Delta Epsilon Chi conference to prove that being diverse is the way to go when competing as a team.
